Mr. Bilingual: An Interview with Nixx FHHN: Formerly known as ‘Nixx P’ if I'm not mistaking; What are you calling yourself these days? Nixx : Actually, I am sticking with Nixx P. Too many people know it at this point to change it without a press conference or something. Though, like Jay Z, I have a bunch of other names that I am known by such as; P I N E D A, El Lobo, Goodole St. Nixx, & Good Money aka Bueno Dinero. FHHN: You made a trip to the west not so long ago. Care to share what prompted your excursion and your quick return? Nixx: Well, that is a long story. The short version is that I got caught up in what I call the Reggaeton bubble of 2005-6. Back then (I know, I sound like it was eons ago) everyone believed that the “Latin explosion” had finally come and labels were eager to sign guys like me, much like was done in the south with southern acts. However, few, if any of the labels, knew much about the music, the culture, or the genre. They were just in it for a quick buck and the guys that signed me are included with that bunch. FHHN: No More English! Why are you so adamant at this point in your decision to go totally Spanish on record? Nixx : Well, I have to be honest, the Latin fans are why I exist. I was never really embraced by the hip hop community that has existed since ’97. Therefore, I decided “f*** em”…”f*** em all” Nore and Fab never EVER mentioned that they were even part Latino until the Reggaeton Bubble. That’s when it was cool to be Latino again in the industry, which I have to label 100% racist. Why are a token this and a token that and then the rest is black. It’s ill to hear a guy my complexion say that, but it is the truth that I have experienced, and many others have as well. Just ask Eminem. The minute I started to record in Spanish it was like being on Emeril Live or something “BAM…ANOTHER NOTCH” and I have never looked back since. That was, I believe 2004, give or take a year. Hence, I am loyal to those who are loyal to me. I may do spanglish, or maybe feature in english, but I don’t see me recording an album of my own in full English. R.I.P. Hip Hop. FHHN: What would you consider to be the most important and life transforming experience you've had while pursuing your musical career? Nixx: The birth of my daughter. I don’t have the luxury of doing much “just for the love” anymore. However, there definitely has to be love. Like Biggie said; “Only make moves when your heart’s in it.” However, things purely of the heart are reserved for family and friends. FHHN: What are you working on outside of music currently? How is it different in terms of the energy and the focus it takes? Nixx: Outside of music I am doing some personal training, real estate, and freelance journalism. All of those things give me the same relative freedom as music, however they require different parts of your mind to work, which I love. For instance, personal training forces me to use my patience, and people skills to the max. It can be like being a dentist pulling teeth with no anesthesia. Now that takes skill! In Real estate there is nobody that can, or will, do the work for you unless your name is Trump. You have to have serious budgeting and organizational skills at the level that I am at in that game. There is no secretary to keep me organized, and there is no pay check coming in weekly. Now Freelance journalism is just like being an MC for me. When it pertains to writing, it (often) seems like God blessed me with a faucet that I can turn on & off. I am soooo thankful for that. Many never find their gift, or find it and never nourish it. The major difference mentally is that someone else sets the parameters for me. The editor of a magazine is like a true music producer. They are the coaches, and I am MJ….pass the roc! FHNN: What's currently in rotation on your playlist? Nixx: Awww man, it is a mistake to ask me that. I am a music JUNKIE! I’ll try not to ramble, pero don’t blame me if I do… I am currently listening to a couple of spanish rock groups in my mp3 player. On is called Pacha Massive, who I had the opportunity to interview. Another is Dr. Krapula from Columbia. Then there is Feist (not spanish rok, but whatever), who has that iPod nano ad. That 1,2,3,4 song is infectious! FHHN: Are you still working out? What's your diet like? What's your take on the pursuit of good health and wellness. Nixx: You know that nagging sensation that you are forgetting something? That is how I feel if I do not work out. So, the answer is ABSA-FREAKIN-LUTELY. Now, about dieting… Humans are Omnivores. We were born that way, and luckily I was not born with allergies and such. So I eat what I like, but in moderation. Exercise, like Life, requires moderation and balance, and that is what I seek constantly. Please do not take that to mean that I have it all figured out because I don’t. My little brother taught me how to get my weight up in minimal time and he had only done it for a year, meanwhile I had 8 years body building. The way that I see it is your body is your corporation. You are CEO of you, and if you do not put in the things that make the business work then sit back and enjoy the destruction. | Mr. Bilingual: An Interview with Nixx K-Swift: An Emcee For The People Hiphop From The South, South Africa That Is… Conscious Query: In the box with HD.
